Why Summer in the Woods is the Best Classroom of All

When you think of summer learning, what comes to mind – worksheets, whiteboards and stuffy rooms? Not at A Touch of the Wild! For us, the best classroom has no walls. It’s dappled in sunshine, filled with birdsong, and bursting with the joyful noise of children exploring the natural world.

This summer, our Holiday Club in the heart of Devon’s woods is bringing learning to life in the most natural way.

1. Nature is the Ultimate Teacher

From the moment children arrive at our forest base, they’re learning without even realising it. They problem-solve as they build dens, develop gross motor skills climbing trees, and grow their curiosity spotting mini beasts or exploring woodland trails.

Whether they’re collecting firewood or cooking over the campfire, every moment is an invitation to wonder.

2. Every Day Is an Adventure

No two days are the same at our Holiday Club. One day might be all about bushcraft and fire lighting, the next about weaving nature wands or cooking bread on sticks over the fire. We follow the children’s lead, encouraging creativity, imagination and deep connection to nature.

They come home tired, muddy, happy and already asking to come back!

3. Tech Off, Minds On

Summer can so easily become a screen-time spiral but in the woods, something shifts. Children reconnect with their senses, their bodies, and each other. There’s something deeply grounding about slowing down and simply being in nature.

We hear from parents time and again: “They’ve never been so calm. So confident. So themselves.”

4. Real Friendships, Real Growth

Mixed-age groups mean our children learn empathy, collaboration and leadership in natural ways. Shy children find their voice. Adventurous ones learn to listen. Everyone gains something.

5. What’s Happening This Summer?

Our Holiday Club is running through to 29th August, and each week brings new forest themes:

  • 🐞 Bug hunts & minibeast safaris
  • 🔥 Campfire cooking & wild treats
  • 🎨 Natural crafts & clay creatures
  • 🪵 Den building & rope skills
  • 🌿 Wild art, weaving & games

Ready to Join the Wild Side?

There’s still time to book your child’s place for our August sessions. Whether it’s for one day or a full week, we promise a summer they’ll never forget.
