Craft Corner – Making Dream Catchers with A Touch of the Wild

Introduction

Welcome to the Craft Corner at A Touch of the Wild! This month, we’re diving into the enchanting world of dream catchers. Dream catchers are beautiful and meaningful crafts that not only add a touch of whimsy to any room but also have a rich history rooted in Native American culture. Join us as we guide you through a fun and easy way to create your very own dream catcher at home!

Materials Needed

  • A wooden hoop (you can make your own by using willow)
  • Natural twine or string
  • Feathers (natural or craft feathers)
  • Beads of various sizes and colours
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Optional: Fabric strips, ribbons, or lace for added decoration

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Wrap the Hoop

Start by wrapping your hoop with the twine or string. This forms the base of your dream catcher. Secure the end of the twine with a knot or a dab of hot glue to prevent it from unravelling. Wrap the twine tightly and evenly around the hoop until the entire surface is covered.

Step 2: Create the Web

Once your hoop is wrapped, it’s time to create the web. Cut a long piece of twine and tie it to the top of the hoop. Work your way around the hoop, making a series of loops. For each loop, pass the twine over the hoop, pull it through the loop, and tighten. Continue this process around the hoop, gradually working your way inward to form a web pattern. Add beads to the twine as you weave for extra charm.

Step 3: Add Feathers and Beads

When you’re satisfied with your web, secure the end of the twine with a knot. Now it’s time to decorate! Attach feathers to the bottom of the dream catcher using small pieces of twine. You can also add beads to the twine before tying the feathers for added decoration. Feel free to get creative and use different lengths of twine to create a layered effect.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Add any additional decorations like fabric strips, ribbons, or lace to personalise your dream catcher. Once you’re happy with your design, make a loop at the top of the hoop with a piece of twine for hanging.

Making a dream catcher is a wonderful way to spend time with your children, fostering creativity and an appreciation for cultural crafts. Hang your dream catcher above your child’s bed or in a special place to catch all their sweet dreams.
